I have always been interested in photography – not with the intention of being behind or in front of the camera – but because it allowed me to see through a different pair of eyes.

When I was young, photography was very different, we only had access to film cameras. I remember the distinct disappointment when a roll came back with 36 prints of muted blues when I was expecting amazing memories. I pointed and shot with careful intention, unlike the snap-happy age we live in today. It took many years and a lot of courage before I decided to pick up a “proper” camera and set it to manual focus.

Through shooting on the street, I notice not only the people, the cars and the buildings that make up the city, but also the light that dances around them and the shadows that they cast. The way in which the shadows slice up high rises and hide emotions on faces allows me to see beyond what is presented in front of me. When coupled with our own imagination, we create unique stories.

Everyone is a photographer. Whilst we may be looking in the same direction, at the same object, we all see differently and choose the images to imprint in our minds. In the words of the late, great Saul Leiter, “We live in a world today where almost everything is a photograph…it teaches you to look, it teaches you to appreciate all kinds of things.”

Jocelyn Ho Self Portrait

Born in Hong Kong, Jocelyn spent most of her early years in the UK. Travel has been a large part of her life and after obtaining her degree in the UK, she spent some time in Paris to explore the city she fell in love with. She returned to London a few years later to work in fashion PR before heading to Switzerland where she became a mother to a beautiful daughter. In 2011, time and tide brought her full circle back to Hong Kong, where she resides today.

The opportunity to become a teacher-librarian at a primary school came about and for the next 10 years, she relished every moment of getting lost in stories and exploring the world of imagination with her students. The global pandemic brought on many changes but most significantly, it brought along a camera and a mentor who taught her everything about photography and continues to guide her in capturing the complexities of life through a camera lens.
